The Value of Waiting

For Kathrynn's fourth birthday she got a little red bike from Dawn. It had training wheels and Kathrynn really enjoyed getting around on it. Unfortunately so did all of the other neighborhood kids. The training wheels got bent and then broken, so everyone else learned to ride a two wheeler. But Kathrynn really struggled with it.

For her 5th birthday we bought her a very fancy Disney Princess scooter. This is no flimsy-ass 'Razor Scooter' (she already had one of those). This thing has blow up tires, hand breaks, a kickstand, the works. Basically it's a bike that you stand on. The logic was this way she would be out there with the other kids riding around, learning balance, without ever having to feel 'bad' that she couldn't ride a two wheeler.

Yesterday she hopped on the neighbors two wheel bike and rode. All by herself. I was so proud!

A while ago I bought a wall chart with the numbers 1-100 on it. It was quickly revealed that Kathrynn could only confidently count to 12. Beyond that she only had the vaguest idea of numbers up to 20. After that she had no idea.

We went over it a couple times that first week and then didn't even look at the poster again until today when she came up to me and asked me to help her count. So I pointed at the numbers for her and she counted all the way to 100! I was impressed.

It's amazing what a little time to mull things over subconsciously can do. :)
